Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI / Indonesia University of Education) which was founded in 1954 is located at Bandung City, Indonesia. Formerly a college of teacher education, UPI transformed into a university offering preparatory education to college programmes (such as pedagogy, linguistics & literary education, economics & business education,  sciences, technological & vocational education, sorts & health education, mathematics & natural science directions, arts & design), and a number of post graduate programmes.

As of the pandemic the Indonesian government restructured the basic education framework to foster a more student-centred development whereby teachers do not have to meet performance and content standards but rather ensure that all learners within a class are on a relatively steady learning pace.

Additionally, the elementary department of UPI has been implementing three programmes since their respective institutionalisaiton: regular (since 2007),  (since 2018), and bilingual (since 2016). The regular programme entails the observance of the “regular”, established curriculum (such as Math, English, Science, etc.). The Tahfidz programme focuses on the studying and deepening of Islamic culture in accordance to the Al-Quran. And the bilingual programme is much like the regular programme only with more emphasis on English as a medium of instruction for the development of reading, writing, and speaking skills using the English language.

System of teaching, although varied across teachers, has some similarity to the normal system of teaching in the Philippines. In the Philippines, the normal system of teaching coheres to either the 5E’s or the 4A’s. At UPI, similar structure is somewhat evident. In the case of my Grade 4C (“c” indicating a bilingual class) and Grade 3C classes, some teachers started their classes with games whilst others went straight to the lesson proper. In some instances, teachers deliver their lesson through a game that lasts for the entire class.
